‘This fulfills a long-held wish for a hotel in Amsterdam’

CEO Rick W. Claus: “We have been searching for an opportunity like this to expand our portfolio. The Element hotel is in the right location, it’s the right brand, and yes, it came at the right time.” Claus Company has been running the four-star Courtyard by Marriott Amsterdam Airport for 20 years and is well-acquainted with franchise formulas of the world’s largest hotel chain. Together with property owner Kroonenberg Groep, Claus Company has complete confidence in this step.

The Right Time

Despite the COVID-19 crisis, now is the right time to expand. Claus explains: “These are challenging times, but the market will bounce back. The family business has been around for 50 years and has a long-term vision. Investing in a hotel expansion at this time aligns with that.” When both Marriott and Kroonenberg Groep approached them for this project, it felt like a perfect match. It also provides an opportunity to deploy employees across both hotels. “In this way, we retain our talents,” says Claus. In addition to this expansion, Claus Company plans to open their successful restaurant concept, Barraca, in the Element hotel in the second half of 2021. According to Claus, it’s an ideal location for an upscale Brazilian dining experience that complements the hotel concept, the luxury shopping center, and the Zuidas business district clientele.

Kroonenberg Groep Positive about Partnership

“We are very pleased with an entrepreneur like Claus Company at Gelderlandplein,” says Lesley Bamberger, CEO of Kroonenberg Groep, the shopping center owner. “Gelderlandplein is known for its personal approach, service, and customer focus. Many of the shops on the square are family businesses that have been here for decades. Claus Company fits in perfectly.”
